For most people, Ascension is a ‘free’ day off. The free Thursday is originally a day in which the path of Jesus is honored to heaven, but for many it is nowadays an excuse for another day with festive activities. NH lists the best (free) activities and events in the province.

1. Dear Heaven Festival Den Helder

In the Fort Westoever, music, food, children’s activities and theater come together at the Lieve Hemel Festival. The festival is for young and old. There is a lot of attention for local artists, theater makers and actors.

2. Rolling kitchens Amsterdam

For lovers of delicacies from all parts of the world you can join one of the many picnic tables in the Westerpark in Amsterdam. Rolling kitchens is a kind of open -air restaurant, where you can enjoy live music during your meal.

Poetry festival Haarlem

Fancy a cultural day? Listen on Thursday at six different locations in Haarlem to poems of around 100 poets. Organizer Haarlem Dichtlijn is ready. The festival kicks off at the Kweekcafé at noon, after which the festival continues in various places in Haarlem.

3. Hemelpop Hilversum

Go loose during the Hemelpop Festival in Hilversum. A musical day, with different artists and music genres. The first three hours of the festival perform ‘young talents’, from the Laurens Music School. The festival is also suitable for young children, with a special ‘Kids Corner’. Later in the day several bands and DJs are reviewed.

4. Blotevoetpad

For anyone who is not dirty from dirty feet, in Oudkarspel can walk over the barefoot path. At Grouwe Voeten, various course have been set out that you can follow, without shoes. The path is accessible for adults and children. Is it going on Thursday anyway rain? Extra challenge! Be careful not to make a smooth tree stump.

5. Klaphekfestival Volendam

Volendam celebrates the third edition of the Klapzekfestival on Thursday. The theme is ‘My Generation’, which makes the party accessible to all ages. “Where else can you drink a beer for the stage with your bap?” Is on the website of the organization.

6. Mokum in Schagen

During ‘Mokum in Schagen’ you can sing along with the greatest Amsterdam songs and nicest smartlaps. Dutch people can hardly do during this traditional Dutch party. Several performances are given next to the church in the city. According to the organization, the sing -along festival is all fun.

7. Ascension market in Callantsoog

Not in the mood for a party, but in a day of strolling? A special Ascension Market is organized in Callantsoog, where you can buy different things. From 10.00 the square is full of more than fifty stalls, ranging from clothing to flower bulbs, garden items to bags.
