A 51-year-old man is at the jam band Goose’s concert in New York’s Madison Square Garden on Saturday fell to his death.
The concertgoer, whose identity was not known at the time of reporting, fell from an “elevated position” within the arena to a lower level. “At approximately 9:51 p.m., officers discovered an unconscious and unresponsive 51-year-old man inside Madison Square Garden,” the NYPD told the New York Post in a statement.
The man was immediately transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The NYPD said the incident remains under investigation.
Goose expresses shock
“We are deeply saddened and devastated to learn of the tragic event that occurred at tonight’s show. We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected,” Goose said in a statement after the concert – the second of two sold-out nights at MSG. “Our thanks go to the emergency personnel and venue staff who stepped in with care and support.”
Despite the incident, Goose’s concert on Saturday went uninterrupted: the band played a full set, including an encore, which was streamed live on Amazon Music. Eyewitnesses reported on social media that police cordoned off about seven rows in the lower section where the man fell, and those attending that section were repositioned elsewhere in the arena.
Goose is still scheduled to perform at the Central Park Summer Stage in New York on Sunday.
Second death of its kind
It is the second time in recent years that a fan has had a fatal fall at a jam band concert in the New York area: In August 2021, a man in his 40s died at the Dead & Company concert at Citi Field in Queens after falling from a balcony in the upper tier onto the concrete below during the concert break. “He attempted a body rollover, lost his balance and landed on the balcony below,” police said at the time.
