Berlin (dpa-AFX)-Only a quarter of Internet users in Germany dare to recognize false information on the Internet. In a representative survey by the digital industry association Bitkom, 26 percent over all ages said that they were able to expose fake news.

The ability to correctly assess the truth content of information from the network depends on age. The 16 to 29 year olds are around a third (32 percent), and only 7 percent in the group from the age of 75.

Manipulated photos and videos difficult to recognize

Internet users find it more difficult to check visual content. According to their own statement, only 17 percent know how to find out whether a picture or video has been manipulated. Here, only 22 percent of the younger ones (16 to 29 years) have sufficient media literacy. In the older ones from the age of 75, the value drops to eleven percent.

However, many people do not prevent the great uncertainty about the truthfulness of the information from spreading the dubious information online without another fact check. Not even half (44 percent) usually check the information on the Internet before sharing the content. It is 48 percent between 16 and 29, in the group of Internet users from the age of 75 only 36 percent.

1,003 people in Germany aged 16 and over were interviewed for the study, including 933 Internet users.

Improve digital skills

Bitkom general manager Bernhard Rohleder said who was digitally traveling today, must be able to do this safely and responsibly. “Media literacy is a basic requirement for self -determination, participation and democratic coexistence in digital space.” Rohleder referred to the nationwide digital day on June 27th. With more than 2,000 actions, they want to expand the digital skills on this day, strengthen digital participation and generally promote understanding of digital technologies./CHD/DP/e.g.
