Fake police officers steal jewelry by chatting with people

In Zevenbergen, a number of residents have fallen for a chatter trick that is causing them a lot of suffering and costing them a pretty penny. So-called police employees managed to talk their way into their home and then stole money and jewelry. The real police are now warning the public about the devious chat trick on its website.

This is how all misery begins. You get calls from people who say they are from the police. They don’t have such nice news. A burglar was arrested who had a list of addresses with him, which allegedly contained your address. People with a lot of money or valuables live at those addresses and would therefore be an interesting target.

Meanwhile, another police officer comes by to take pictures of the house. And while the calling scammer remains on the line with you. On the phone, the scammer asks if you would like to check some locks in another room. While you’re gone, the scammer taking pictures of the house strikes. He steals valuables and disappears. The connection on the telephone is disconnected.

Credible
It has already happened to several people and every day the police receives more reports from people who have fallen for these chatter tricks. Reports are coming from Zevenbergen and the surrounding area, but the police say that it could happen in more places.

The problem according to the police is that these scammers work accurately. They even call from a landline number, which looks more credible than a mobile number.

The police share these tips
The police say that they assume that several scammers are involved. For example, some people receive a call from a woman, while other people get a man on the line. To prevent other people from being robbed by these chatterboxes, they share a number of tips:

  • If someone on the phone introduces themselves as a police officer, bank employee or home care agency, for example, do not initiate a conversation. Hang up and call the agency back to check the story.
  • Don’t just open the door to someone who says they are from the police or the bank.
  • The police never come by to collect your debit card, PIN code, money, valuables or jewelry and store them safely.
