A man pretending to be a police officer tried to scam several Bussumers by telephone last night. The police report this.
The ‘police officer’ invariably gave the same story. He said he was from the police and that the person on the phone was in danger. In his story, he said that suspects had been arrested who were carrying a note with the name and address of the person on the phone.
The fake police officer then asked if people on the line had money and valuables at home, because then ‘the police’ would come by to pick up those items and ‘take them into custody’.
Trick is more common
As far as we know, no one has fallen for the scammer’s story. Most people hung up the phone and then called the real police.
According to the police, this scam is becoming more common. “Telephone scammers regularly use new tricks to cheat people out of money. It is good to know that the police never call people and ask for valuables or money, or offer to pick up these items,” it said.
