On paper, the Dennenappel seemed to already be in Alkmaar, but Monday, April 21, turned out very differently than expected. With Go Ahead Eagles, AZ met the ideal opponent and given the difference in quality, this had to be the best day of the year for AZ fans. The two lost finals (2016 & 2017) still hurt and three times is a charm.
Competition prevailed in this exciting final, where both teams were evenly matched. After a successful penalty from Parrott, this time, the win seemed almost certain. Until Peer Koopmeiners made an unfortunate handball deep in extra time. The penalty that followed was coolly shot by Mats Deijl.
Afterwards, the unlucky guy tells the camera that it felt like a violation. “The judgment was very different and that is very painful.”
