Fabric galore, plunging necklines and renaissance

Of course, the Oscar fashion does not have to be practical. However, the guests at the ceremony must be able to sit with it for a good three hours – and that may have been difficult for some on Sunday evening in Los Angeles. Because their bodies were wrapped in XXL-sized fabric arrangements. From the waist down, the actress Sofia Carson sank into a wide skirt made of draped, black tulle – a model by Giambattista Valli.

Singer-songwriter Billie Eilish opted for a theatrical oversized Gucci gown awash with ruffles. In the case of the Colombian Carolina Gaitán, the long train and the dramatic play of volume stood in contrast to the completely undressed parts of the body. Her fellow US actress Niecy Nash followed a similar style, here in bright pink. Finally, Jada Pinkett Smith trailed a gigantic train. Stephanie Beatriz also wore a train – her flowy black Dior dress had an asymmetric cut, the pleated fabric being shaped with a twisted cord at the bodice.

Lupita Nyong’o wore a heavy Prada flared dress in yellow, the fabric was embellished with sequins and jewels. Olivia Colman wore a long, silver Dior Couture dress with numerous small pleats and oversized, baggy sleeves that created volume

Deep décolletés – not just for women

Deep décolletés, dresses with high slits, bare midriffs: On Monday night at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, many guests wore outfits that showed a lot of skin. For example Amy Schumer, one of the three moderators of the event, in a dress by Oscar de la Renta. Actress Ariana DeBose won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in a red Valentino gown on Monday night. Also in red, Tracee Ellis Ross performed. Her dress is by Carolina Herrera. Tennis champion Venus Williams, on the other hand, chose white as the color and Elie Saab as the designer. This also equipped his design with a low-slung décolleté.

And actor Timothée Chalamet also showed a lot of skin. The French-American actor wore a sparkling embroidered cropped tuxedo jacket with lace cuffs – no shirt underneath. A design by the French luxury label Louis Vuitton. The next highlight: the model comes from the women’s collection. He also combined jewelry from Cartier, whose brand ambassador the 26-year-old is.

Sydney Sweeny, best known for portraying Cassie Howard on the Netflix hit series Euphoria, wore a pastel-colored Miu Miu gown with a scooped bodice encrusted with Swarovski crystals. Demi Singleton, also in Miu Miu, flaunted a strapless dress with a crystal-encrusted lilac bustier. Rachel Ziegler showed skin in a subtle way with a sheer tulle dress with a draped neckline by Dior – also covered with glittering beads.

Renaissance on the red carpet

The Swedish make-up artist and hairstylist Eva von Bahr brought high culture to Hollywood. The 53-year-old walked the red carpet on Monday’s Oscars night in a spectacular gown printed with a Renaissance painting. Anyone who was well versed in art history recognized immediately: It is the ‘Madonna im Grünen’, a famous portrait of the Virgin Mary by Raphael, the original of which hangs in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Her handbag was chosen to match. It was shaped like a bust and was reminiscent of Michelangelo’s ‘David’, Raphael’s great rival. (dpa/FashionUnited)
