Fabian Hürzeler is extending his contract with Brighton & Hove Albion until 2029 – thereby rejecting a move to Bayer Leverkusen. He explains in his own words what keeps the 33-year-old on the English south coast.
Brighton coach Fabian Hürzeler has extended his contract with the English first division club until summer 2029. Originally his contract would have expired in 2027. This means that speculation about a return to the Bundesliga is off the table – Hürzeler was recently considered a possible successor to Kasper Hjulmand at Bayer Leverkusen.
Hürzeler came to Brighton from FC St. Pauli in 2024. He had previously led the Hamburg club to the Bundesliga in his first season as head coach. In its debut season, Brighton finished eighth. In the current season, the club is once again in eighth place with three match days before the end of the season. Qualification for the Europa League is still possible.
Hürzeler said: “I really enjoy working for this club and really enjoy living in this city. I’m really happy about the contract extension. This long-term commitment to the club is an honor and only strengthens my desire to successfully implement our shared vision.” He added: “I’m even more excited about what lies ahead of us.”
Club president Tony Bloom also commented: “Since his appointment, Fabian has continued the club’s positive development over the last few seasons with consistently good performances on the pitch and has developed a clear playing philosophy.”
