Ferrari, program completed. But Red Bull still seems faster. In a nutshell, this is the verdict on Friday in Bahrain, where the 2023 World Championship has officially begun. The Prancing Horse worked a lot on set-up research and in morning free practice, making comparisons on the new single-pylon rear wing. For Sainz, however, a spin in FP1 and a forced tire change. In that phase Charles obtained his best time in 1’34″257, while Carlos remained with the 1’36″072 obtained with the first set of tyres, deciding to concentrate – like his teammate – on qualifying with higher fuel load.

Then in the second session both Ferraristi worked with the soft rubber to take advantage of the track conditions, similar to those they will find tomorrow at the start of qualifying. Charles stopped the clock at 1’31”367, while Carlos obtained 1’31”956 despite a mistake. The two then worked in race configuration for the rest of the session, again on the Soft tyres. Leclerc completed 26 laps, Sainz 28. An opinion? Fine, but there will be a fight.

Leclerc however, he is happy with the work done: “Our free practice went according to schedule – said the Monegasque – we completed a good number of laps and I feel more and more at ease in the car. It’s still difficult to say what the true values are in terms of field, also because I understand that today the teams have implemented rather different work plans. We remain focused on ourselves, determined to push in the right direction”.

For Sainz a few more complications: “A Friday that was more complicated than expected – said the Spaniard – we had some balance problems today and so it was necessary to change several settings on the car to react to the limitations that slowed me down. However, it’s only Friday and I’m convinced that the analyzes we will do tonight will allow us to take a step forward tomorrow”.
