The petrol station operator Esso, a subsidiary of the oil company Exxonmobil, is allowed to search for lithium in another ten areas in Lower Saxony.
Lithium is used, among other things, to produce powerful batteries for electric cars.
The corresponding approval was granted on April 1, the State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology (LBEG) said in Hanover. Already on January 1, the company had been assigned four so -called permission fields to explore the raw material.
In total, there are 20 such fields throughout Lower Saxony where different companies can search for the raw material, it said. Further applications from the Exxonmobil subsidiary Esso and other companies are already available to the LBEG.
So far searching on a sixth of the area of Lower Saxony
The total area, which has so far been released to search for lithium, is around 7,500 square kilometers, which almost corresponds to a sixth of the area of Lower Saxony. However, this does not mean that lithium is also won on this huge area, said Carsten Mühlenmeier, the head of the State Office.
In the further progress, the various projects would focus on very small sub -areas. In northern Germany, lithium can be dismantled very resource -saving, said Mühlenmeier.
In perspective, Lower Saxony, which is currently still the number one state in natural gas production, can also become federal state number one in funding for lithium.
Lithium extraction via boreholes
In Lower Saxony, lithium should be broken down in the so -called borehole mining. Similar to natural gas production, there will only be small -scale systems on the surface. The lithium is extracted by the promotion of deep thermal water in a circulatory system from which the raw material was removed.
Statements of the counties
The dismantling in classic mines, such as in the Ore Mountains, or on questionable environmental conditions such as on other continents, is not intended in northern Germany, said Mühlenmeier.
The permission fields for viewing were examined by the Lbb, the affected counties asked for comment. The affected cities and municipalities were also informed.
Mountain law operations still have to be followed
However, no concrete actions for the viewing of lithium deposits have yet been covered with the approval. To do this, the operational plans for matters must also be presented and approved. Among other things, a separate participation procedure is necessary for this.
The ten other permits now allocated are located in the districts of Celle, Cloppenburg, Diepholz, Emsland, Harburg, Heidekreis, Lüneburg, Nienburg/Weser, Osterholz, Rotenburg (Wümme), Uelzen, Vechta, Verden, the district -free city of Delmenhorst and the Hanover region. They are initially limited to five years until March 31, 2030.
Exxonmobil’s share is pre-designed by NYSE 1.29 percent lower at $ 104.43.
