It may not sound very nice, cooking an egg using your own feces. But at least it is possible. Because at the sewage treatment plant of the WDODelta water board in Echten, they now turn your excrement into green gas.
In Echten they collect the sewage water from Hoogeveen and the surrounding area. That is all the water, your urine and feces that you flush in the toilet, but also water from your dishwasher and your shower, among other things. In addition, rainwater also ends up in the sewer. All that water is filtered and purified in Echten, mainly by bacteria. These bacteria remove all waste products from the water, after which the clean water is returned to the Hoogeveense Vaart. What remains in Echten is sludge.
That sludge is taken to large tanks on the site. These tanks have all been completely renovated to convert the sludge into green gas.
