There was an explosion at the D66 party office in The Hague on Thursday evening around 9 p.m. The police confirmed this after reporting The Telegraph and it A.D. No injuries were reported, but there is damage to the building anyway. The police are investigating what happened.
D66 said in a response to De Telegraaf that a fireworks bomb was thrown through the mailbox of the office on Lange Houtstraat in The Hague. “It is not entirely clear where this comes from, but it will not be a coincidence that this happened to us,” a D66 spokesperson told the newspaper. “Keep your hands off our people.”
Rachelle Smook, the chairman of the D66 youth department Young Democrats, says that more than thirty people were present in the party office at the time of the explosion. A speakers’ evening organized by a local department was in progress, with former diplomat Karel van Oostrum performing. “Everyone is physically okay, but very shocked,” says Smook, who was not present himself. “People are now being questioned by the police.”
The D66 party office was also a target during the Malieveld riots last September. Then rioters smashed a window of the building and tried to drive in a burning container. There was a lot of damage inside at the time, but no one was injured.
VVD party leader Dilan Yesilgoz mentioned it on Thursday evening on X already a “cowardly action”. “Threatening and intimidating a political party (or anyone for that matter) is absolutely unacceptable,” she writes.
