Passers-by sometimes have to look twice when they pass Arend Snijder’s garden. Because when Arend strolls through his garden, a large colored bird often follows behind him. One that normally lives in Africa. But this bird feels right at home in Paterswolde.

The animal regularly behaves like a dog. Arend can talk to it, give it chunks from its hand, and he even goes inside with it when he has a cup of coffee with his wife. I’m talking about a crane.

For Expeditie Nederland, Ineke visits Arend Snijder and his wife Remmie. In the garden in Paterswolde she does not know what she sees. Wherever Arend goes, there goes the crane that he always calls ‘my friend’. But during the interview Ineke finds out that it is actually his girlfriend.

She also speaks to Arend’s wife Remmie, of whom the crane does not want to know anything. The bird regards its owner as its mother and Remmie is a threat. But how do they do that when Arend is sick, who will take care of the bird? You can see it in this episode of Expeditie Nederland.
