“Expect actions” – Mercedes boss Wolff puts Fia under pressure

The memorable and controversial 2021 season finale of Formula 1 is still causing debate. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff is now making a clear statement – and also talks about Lewis Hamilton.

In the course of processing the controversial Formula 1 final, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has increased the pressure on the world motorsport association Fia. “I expect actions and not just words. We can’t freestyle like that with the set of rules in a sport that’s supposed to be a sport. There needs to be clarity about the rules before the start of the new season so that every driver, every team and everyone Fan knows what is allowed and what is not,” Wolff demanded in the specialist magazine “Auto, Motor und Sport”.

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was the main victim of some of the decisions made by race director Michael Masi during a safety car phase at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the end of last year. Hamilton had missed his eighth title, instead Max Verstappen in the Red Bull had secured the world championship for the first time thanks to an overtaking maneuver on the last lap and immediately after the end of the safety car phase.

Since then there has been speculation about Masi’s replacement at the Fia. Allegedly, a premature end to the career of the frustrated Hamilton is also in the room.

Wolff and Hamilton’s disappointment with the outcome of the final is “very deep. Lewis, I and the whole team are disillusioned,” said Wolff. “I don’t think we’ll ever get over it, especially Lewis as a driver. We can at least try to do better in the future together with the Fia.”

The rules enforcers of the Fia are currently working on the events surrounding the explosive last race of the season. The results of a detailed analysis are to be presented to the Formula 1 Commission in February and decisions on them will be made at a World Council meeting in Bahrain on March 18 before the season opener.
