Brian May has announced an expanded version of his Star Fleet Project for next year. For the Kurz project, the Queen guitarist had worked with Eddie Van Halen, Alan Gratzer (drummer of REO Speedwagon), Phil Chen (among others bass player for Rod Stewart) and Fred Mandel (among other keyboard player for Pink Floyd) in 1983.

Number three from the “Brian May Gold Series”

In an interview with Variety the musician explained that the set was the “No. 3 in the ‘Brian May Gold Series’, the reworking of his studio works. He said: “I’m very excited about this now that I’ve pulled out these recordings of me jamming with Eddie Van Halen and Phil Chen. It’s very emotional because Ed is no longer alive. And neither is Phil anymore.”

May went on to admit that he never liked the mix of the “Star Fleet” single and took the opportunity to improve it. “Now is EVHs [Eddie Van Halens] Larger than life sound,” he enthused. “You’re going to hear the progression of Eddie’s solo, which I always thought was one of the best things he’s done – a true undying classic among his tracks. And we’ll give you everything, every take of every song. The things that went wrong, the laughs, finding new things to do.”

The role of Eddie van Halen

The artist then reminisced and said he always admired Van Halen’s art as he reviewed the old sessions. At the same time, May admits that he regrets that the two have not worked together more: “I have with Alex [Van Halen] and thinking about how I wish I could have stayed closer to Ed,” the musician said. “I am very sorry. He was a wonderful soul – a Peter Pan who never grew up, never wanted to grow up and never should have grown up. He should still be with us.”
