The exhibition “Diaspora Wonderland. Fashioning Worlds” opens at the ifa Gallery Berlin at the end of March and focuses on fashion as an expression of identity, memory and cultural exchange.
The exhibition sees fashion as a kind of cultural seismograph that makes social changes visible – for example in questions of identity, gender, sensuality, origin and imagination. The focus is on diasporic experiences and identities. They are described as shaping forces of new cultural spaces and “wonderlands” that emerge through movement, migration and collective memories.
The show also shows how craft practices, aesthetic forms and knowledge spread, change and develop within diasporic communities. Fashion appears not only as the design of clothing, but also as a medium that conveys stories and makes individual and collective experiences visible.
The exhibition is curated by Lotfi Aoulad. On display are works by Buki Akomolafe, Margaux Derhy, Sophia Kacimi, Sarah Makharine and Nix. The artists work with different media such as textiles, sound, photography and sculptural clothing.
The exhibition is organized by the ifa-Galerie Berlin, which regularly presents international contemporary art with its programs and addresses social issues such as migration, post-colonial perspectives and cultural connections. Since 2017, the gallery has pursued a transdisciplinary approach to questions of movement, colonial legacies and global connections with projects such as “Untie to Tie”.
The show runs from March 27th to June 7th, 2026 in the gallery at Linienstraße 139/140. The opening will take place on March 26th, followed by a roundtable with participating artists on March 27th at 4 p.m.
