Exhibition about Art and Magazine covers

Print is of course the most creative boy in the class. Not only the mix of typography, but also photography and illustration art makes the medium of print a perfect canvas for creativity. Perhaps more than any other medium.

It is therefore not surprising that art has a prominent place in many magazines. The Originals is an exhibition about the power of art in magazines, especially the cover art. The exhibition opens on May 13 and can be seen until June 17, 2023 at Gallery Madé van Krimpen at Prinsengracht 615 H in Amsterdam. The exhibition is curated by Jaap Biemans, art director of Volkskrant Magazine, among others.

Artworks that have appeared on well-known magazine covers have been brought together for the exhibition. You can view the original works of art together with the accompanying magazines, making the exhibition a special look at the relationship between art and media.

Jaap Biemans started in 2010 with cover junkie, an online platform for collecting magazine covers. The platform mainly serves to share his love for magazine covers.
Biemans made a selection of magazine covers and the artists of the original work were invited to show their work. Artists such as Jack Davison, Beni Bischof, Kwesi Botchway, Carlotta Guerrero, Katrien de Blauwer and Duran Lantink are taking part in the exhibition in Amsterdam.

This artwork by Beni Bischoff graced the controversial cover that Jaap Biemans himself made for Volkskrant Magazine. ‘The finger’ by Beni Bischoff and the accompanying magazine cover can be seen at the exhibition ‘The Originals’.
