For Thomas Müller, it’s all about finding creative solutions on the pitch. Or as he calls it: “Keeping perspective in the chaos.” In the BR24Sport exclusive interview he talks about his short-term goals and his future with the record champions.

Thomas Müller is still fit for the big challenges on the pitch and is still a factor in FC Bayern’s game. He is keeping a low profile about his future plans and whether he will extend his contract with the Munich team for another year and laughs after a meeting as a toy brand ambassador in an exclusive interview with BR24Sport: He has now completed training as a trainer and “has the Lego trainer’s license in his pocket. Accordingly Of course, many doors are open to me.”

He made playing his profession. However, this is “not an ordinary job” as a professional football player. “‘Playing’ is already in the description, and of course that makes it even easier to retain it. (…) If you want to be a good footballer, then you still have to have that childlike quality in you carry, this playfulness, the creativity.” To do this well as a so-called spatial interpreter, which he describes as: “Keeping perspective in the chaos.”

Müller’s future: FC Bayern is first contact person

At 35, he is no longer an undisputed starting XI candidate at FC Bayern. And some people wonder why Müller still does this to himself, sometimes being perceived as a last resort when others fail. So how long will this last? Müller remains vague on the question: “I’ve already tried to express myself as best I can, because there’s nothing to announce at the moment,” he says.

He will not report directly to the outside world about every conversation he has with his club. But he could say this much: “It’s clear that the club, Bavaria, is my first point of contact, and I have to sort myself out first. And then we’ll see.”

Defeat in Rotterdam “somewhere deserved”

Müller’s focus is initially on the best possible sporting performance this season – in the Bundesliga and the Champions League. While things are going well nationally, there was a setback in the premier class with the third defeat. The direct qualification for the round of 16 is after 0:3 at Feyenoord Rotterdam in danger, The play-offs are looming: “One may not have needed it, the other may have been more deserving. At the end of the day we have to deal with the results,” Müller remains pragmatic.

The defeat in Rotterdam, for example, “we deserved it somewhere. Playing football involves the two most important things, namely preventing goals and scoring goals. And we simply weren’t good enough that day.” On the other hand, he still sees his team as having a better quality than many other teams. “I have the feeling that we are strong and that we can play good games.”

Champions League in view: Winning against Bratislava “is a must”

It is no consolation for him that other world clubs such as Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus Turin are also having great difficulties. Müller prefers to just look at himself and FC Bayern: “We want the last group game (Wednesday, 9 p.m. against Slovan Bratislava/radio report in the BR24 Sport Livecenter) win. And then we’ll see who we get. A win is absolutely mandatory. We don’t need to mince words.”

If you want to win the Champions League, you have to be able to beat any opponent anyway. “And we have the confidence to do that. And that’s not why I’m scared or worried, even if we have to go to the play-offs now. Rather, it’s just a knockout game in February, with a home and away game and I’m looking forward to it.”

Good football does not guarantee results

He likes the way coach Vincent Kompany plays football “very, very often. But that doesn’t guarantee results. And that’s why it remains exciting.” In terms of sport anyway, but also what will happen to him personally when he is no longer a football player.
