FKA Twigs is an accomplished dancer in her own right – but when you get the chance to pick up a few moves from one of the best, in this case David Byrne, why should you miss it?
In this exclusive clip from an upcoming episode of Coachella’s “Artist on Artist” – the new interview series debuts today on the Coachella YouTube channel – Twigs raves about Byrne’s signature movement style: “What you do is almost beyond dance. It’s a kind of kinesis, a kinetic representation of the music that’s so free.”
Byrne humbly thanks him, and Twigs asks him to show her a few steps. “This is the best day of my life,” she says after he grants her wish. Then Byrne leads Twigs through some of his classic, deliciously weird moves: stumbling as if you’re about to fall, leaning forward as far as possible while continuing to sing, or balancing on one leg.
Twigs learns from Byrne
When Twigs asks him for a “groovy one,” Byrne pulls out a classic: He goes limp and wiggles like a puppet on strings.
The impromptu dance lesson is from FKA Twigs and Byrne’s collaborative episode, which will be released in full next week on the Coachella YouTube channel. The opening episode, released today, features legendary DJs and producers Armin van Buuren and Adam Beyer in conversation about the evolution of tech and trance, vinyl misadventures and the changing EDM landscape – especially since Covid.
Van Buuren said it is much “easier for me to DJ” today, especially because people have become “more open-minded” to underground electronic music and trance. Beyer added: “I feel like Covid reset the scene in a way, and a lot has changed in these two or three years. Some for the better, some for the worse. It seemed like part of the culture was a little lost in the transition – but at the same time it was like a blank canvas. A lot less prejudice towards the music.”
Other interviewees in the series
In addition to van Buuren and Beyer as well as FKA Twigs and Byrne, the “Artist on Artist” series will also feature conversations with PinkPantheress and Slayyyter, as well as Sara Landray and LP Giobbi, TOKiMONSTA and Mary Droppinz. All four episodes were filmed over the past two Coachella weekends.
