Former Bundesliga coach Mirko Slomka will cancel the 14-time Polish champions Górnik Zabrze, the current club of ex-national player Lukas Podolski, after negotiations about a commitment. The 49-year-old confirmed on Tuesday at “sports1‘ a report of the ‘picture“, according to which he negotiated the job in Poland. But he will not sign a contract.
A continuation of his coaching career, Slomka also works as a TV expert, but he kept an open mind: “I like being a coach wrong. And I’m still a good coach. I would of course take on an exciting job in Germany and abroad. A job abroad would not be a detour, but a benefit. I wouldn’t do crazy things like Saudi Arabia or China.”
Slomka flew to Poland with his advisor at the weekend. At Górnik, he was said to be ahead of 34-year-old Bartosch Gaul from regional league club 1. FSV Mainz 05 II as a top candidate for the coaching post that had been vacant for a week. On June 14, the first division team parted ways with Jan Urban, who took over just a year ago and finished eighth in the Ekstraklasa.
The 54-year-old Slomka coached FC Schalke 04, his home club Hannover 96 and Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga, as well as Karlsruher SC and 96 again in the 2nd Bundesliga. Lower Saxony was his last coaching position between July and November 2019.
