Almost 70 years ago, Vera Schenone took part in the Olympic Games and made history. Now she is back in the headlines at an older age.

In the small Italian town of Moncalieri near Turin, 84-year-old Vera Schenone, a former Olympian, shot and seriously injured her neighbor Stefano Milanese (52). The incident occurred last Friday. According to a report in the newspaper La Stampa, Schenone broke into her neighbor’s garden with her husband’s gun. There she fired several shots, two of which hit Milanese – one in the stomach, one in the arm. The engineer had to undergo emergency surgery and be transferred to the intensive care unit.

Schenone was then arrested by the police and apparently did not show any resistance. The former ski racer is said to be suffering from a form of dementia and was admitted to a psychiatric facility. The revolver she used was legally registered to her husband, who was now charged with failing to keep the firearm safe.

The former alpine skier was the youngest participant in Italy to take part in the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo. The crime has sparked renewed discussions in Italy about stricter gun laws and the control of gun license holders.
