Former Bundesliga professional Aaron Hunt has ended his football career after 17 years. “I’m breaking up. I’ve decided that I won’t play anymore,” said the 35-year-old of “Bild” on Tuesday.

Sad end at HSV

Second division club Hamburger SV Hunt’s contract had not been extended in the summer. After that, the midfielder kept fit privately for a possible new club. “I’ve had a few opportunities to sign since the summer. But it didn’t really work out in the end. It doesn’t make sense to wait another six months. The subject of professional football is over for me.”

From 2004 to 2014, Hunt played 286 competitive games for Werder Bremen, scoring 51 goals. Between 2015 and 2021 he made 153 appearances (26 goals) for HSV. He also played for the national team and played a total of three games (0 goals). “I’ve had a long, beautiful career. And 35 is also an age when you can stop playing football,” said Hunt.

Hunt won the DFB Cup with Werder and VfL Wolfsburg. “The memories of the UEFA Cup final against Donetsk with Bremen or my goal in the Champions League against Real Madrid are also very vivid,” said Hunt. The low point was the relegation to the Bundesliga with HSV in 2018: “It still hurts today. And that I didn’t manage to return to the first division with the team.”
