Ex-Leverkusener: Menezes temporarily takes over the Brazilian national team

As of: 02/15/2023 6:58 p.m

Former Bundesliga professional Ramon Menezes will temporarily take over as coach of the Brazilian national soccer team. Previously there had been speculation about a commitment from Carlo Ancelotti.

Menezes, who recently won the South American championship with Brazil’s U20s, will be the coach of Brazil’s first friendly in 2023, Brazil’s CBF, based in Rio de Janeiro, announced. Accordingly, the test against World Cup semi-finalists Morocco will take place in Tangier on March 25th.

20 games for Leverkusen

The 50-year-old Menezes used to play under the name Ramon Hubner in the Bundesliga at Bayer Leverkusen. In the 1995/96 season, the attacking midfielder made 20 appearances for the Werkself and scored two goals.

The previous Brazilian national coach Tite had signed a termination agreement in January. His early end at the post had already been determined before the quarter-finals of the record world champion at the World Cup in Qatar. CBF President Ednaldo Rodrigues promised a new name by early February.

Speculations about Ancelotti

Last week, the CBF denied a report that the association had received the verbal confirmation from the Italian Ancelotti. Ancelotti’s contract, about which there had been speculation before, runs until June 30, 2024 with Champions League winners Real Madrid.
