Former Italian international Giacomo Bonaventura has announced the end of his professional career. The 36-year-old midfielder, who was without a club after his contract with Al-Shabab FC in Saudi Arabia ended last summer, wrote on his social channels: “When you no longer feel the inner fire, it’s time. It’s pointless to keep playing and moving. You risk not having fun anymore and in my opinion that makes no sense. When I started to feel that, I made this decision.”
Bonaventura began his professional career in 2008 with Atalanta, for whom he subsequently played 135 times (24 goals/16 assists). In 2014 he moved to AC Milan for a fee of 5.3 million euros, for whom he played most frequently with 184 games (35 goals/30 assists). The creative right-footer also reached his highest market value there in January 2017 at 24 million euros. Bonaventura’s last stop in his homeland was at Fiorentina from 2020 to 2024, for which he added 162 games, 22 goals and 22 assists. He made his debut for the Squadra Azzurra in 2013 and was to play 17 more games over time. However, Bonaventura was unable to make it into the squad.
