The Roman Kostomarow case shocked the sports world in early 2023. How is the ex-ice skaters doing today?

An athlete who ends his career because hands and feet have to be amputated: What sounds like an absolute horror story became a sad truth in the case of Roman Kostomarow. At the beginning of 2023, his story shook the world.

As a result of a Covid 19 disease, stubborn pneumonia and blood poisoning developed in the Russian. Body parts died at the time due to a bloodless supply. In order to reduce the risk of further complications, the doctors decided to amputate their hands and feet.

Roman Kostomarow’s parade discipline was the ice dance. There he became Olympic champion (2006), world champion (2004, 2005) and European champion (2004, 2005, 2006). After the incident, he had to end his career. But how is Kostomarow doing today, about two years after the accident?

After the amputation, a completely new life began for Kostomarow. He had to speak, eat and go again. The Russian is now moving away with the help of prostheses. As early as May 2023, he reported from the hospital and thanked his supporters.

After his release, he stayed in touch with the hospital staff, thanked the doctors and the nursing staff who had saved his life. In mid -December 2023, many fans probably didn’t believe their eyes. Not even a year after the serious amputation, Kostomarow returned to the ice. On Instagram he posted a video on which he skates. Not as smooth as before the illness, there is also a fall on the video – but luck to be on the ice again can be noted.

In general, Kostomarow divides a lot on Instagram with its over 500,000 followers. There he gives insights into his life with the prosthesis – whether with ice skating, swimming or on vacation. On Instagram it also becomes clear how quickly he recovered from the accident. As early as mid -October 2023, Kostomarow posted a video on which he drives a car. He also said in Russian: “Let’s go, I have my pants full.”

Of course, Kostomarow is extremely popular with Russian media according to his story of suffering. So he was invited to some TV shows. There were also two documentaries on ex-ice skaters on Russian television. It was about his illness and the return to the ice.

But not only Kostomarov’s last years were the content of the documentary, it was also about his childhood. He did not do any sport at all up to the age of nine, only then did he start swimming – but without great success. It was his mother who persuaded him to start with the figure skating.

Today the 47-year-old is a positive example of how to fight back into life after severe strokes of fate. Because one thing becomes clear on his contributions: Kostomarow looks happy with his “new” life – despite his numerous restrictions.
