Ex-Guardiola assistant successor to Terim at Galatasaray

Istanbul (AP) – One day after the separation from star coach Fatih Terim, the 22-time Turkish soccer champion has found a successor. The Spaniard Domenec Torrent, who was originally only supposed to work as an assistant coach, should bring the traditional club back on the road to success.

The club has confidence in torrenting “strong personality” and “successful” career, said club president Burak Elmas. The 59-year-old Torrent was Pep Guardiola’s assistant at FC Bayern Munich and most recently head coach at Flamengo Rio de Janeiro until November 2020.

Galatasaray split from Fatih Terim on January 10th, drawing the consequences of the crash to 12th place in the table. A message from the association said goodbye by mutual consent.

The former national coach Termin (68) was the coach of Galatasaray in the late 90s and most recently since 2017. He has led the traditional club to the Turkish championship eight times and won several trophies with the club. The German Roger Schmidt, who coaches PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, was also named as a possible successor candidate in the Turkish media.
