Marco Köller successfully played football in the GDR before he had to end his career due to injuries. Today he lives on Lake Constance in Switzerland.

With the BFC Dynamo, Marco Köller became GDR champion in 1987 and 1988. The defender, born in East Berlin, was previously considered one of the largest defensive talents, and in addition to the BFC Dynamo, the MSV Duisburg also contracted. Due to injuries, Köller had to end his career. Now the 56-year-old lives in Switzerland according to the “Blick”.

The Swiss newspaper met with the ex-professional in a community on Lake Constance, where he has been living in the canton of St. Gallen for 13 years. Köller emphasized that football belongs to the past in his life: “I have finished it. That was a long time ago.” A punitive order from the public prosecutor of the canton of St. Gallen, which is “Blick”, brought the newspaper to the former professional footballer. The reason for the criminal order was a threat to his landlord. The defender, who works on the construction, has never liked media hype.

In the interview, he explained: “I’m fine, only the work is a bit bothered. Biceps tear there and torn here. Maybe I can have my retirement pension here. With 63.” Köller fled from the GDR in the FRG, but exactly when the turn came.

He still remembers his first steps in football: “You start as a little quilting (little boy, Note d. Red.), and then at once you are in a youth team at 17. That was strange. “Köller played from the U16 to the U21 national team of the GDR and then also for the Olympic selection.

But he was not “immersed”, emphasized Köller, who was no longer present in public: “I just stopped football and then worked. There is nothing more.” He added down -to -earth: “I don’t find myself famous.” Previous fans don’t have to worry: “I am very satisfied with my life.”
