Two years after his handbike accident with severe head injuries, former Formula 1 driver Alessandro Zanardi has to cope with another stroke of fate.
His villa in Noventa Padovana, northern Italy, caught fire in part on Tuesday, the fire is said to have started due to a defect in the photovoltaic system.
The machines on which the pilot depends were damaged, Italian media reported. The 55-year-old was therefore taken to a clinic in the city of Vicenza.
Zanardi lost both legs in a racing accident at the Lausitzring in 2001. He later got into cycling and was a four-time winner of the Paralympics in the handbike.
On June 19, 2020, he lost control of his handbike in Tuscany. He had collided with a truck and suffered severe head and facial injuries.
After that, Zanardi had to undergo multiple surgeries and fought for his life for a long time.
