After only six months, the end is: Marco Antwerpen is his job as head coach of VfL Osnabrück. The ex-entrepreneur had previously made the class with the club.

With Eintracht Braunschweig, Marco Antwerp once managed to promote the 2nd Bundesliga – and then had to go. Now the 53-year-old suffered a similar fate. After making the league in the 3rd division with VfL Osnabrück, he started his post as head coach of Lower Saxony. The club confirmed this on Friday.

The association justifies the decision with the missed seasonal goals. According to an in -depth analysis, it was clear that one had to reorganize in the sporting area, said Managing Director Michael Welling. With Antwerp, assistant coach Frank Döpper also has to take his hat. “In the analysis as a whole, but especially the last few days, the separation from Marco Antwerpen and Frank Döpper is the only right step,” says Advisory Board Chairman Holger Elixmann.

Antwerp had only taken over VfL in December 2024 and led from the relegation zone with 39 points from 26 games. At the end of the season, Osnabrück landed on a disappointing 14th place in the table – but five points in front of a relegation zone.

At the end of the season, Antwerp with Osnabrück then lost three competitive games in a row and, among other things, missed the move into the DFB Cup. Anyone who inherits the 53-year-old is not for the time being. “We work on this at high pressure, but also have the necessary time through the end of the season to be able to make the next important decisions very conscientiously – this also includes the reproduction of the coaching team,” says Managing Director Welling.
