No more Wayne Rooney. On Sunday his club Plymouth lost 2-0 to Oxford United and was booed by their own fans.

Wayne Rooney’s chapter at Plymouth Argyle has ended after just seven months. The second division club announced their separation from the 39-year-old on Sunday after the team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Oxford United on the same day. The fans showed their displeasure with loud whistles. According to the club, the decision was made “by mutual agreement”.

The former England striker’s record was anything but convincing: he only managed four wins in 23 league games. Rooney said goodbye with warm words: “Plymouth Argyle will always have a special place in my heart, I will continue to follow their path.”

For Rooney, Plymouth was the fourth coaching position of his career. However, there were no lasting successes. He was unable to convince in the long term either at Derby County, where he worked from October 2020 to June 2022, nor at DC United in the USA (July 2022 to October 2023) or Birmingham City (October 2023 to January 2024). A year ago he lost his position at Birmingham around the turn of the year – on January 2nd.
