The native Berlin Gedion Zelalem (28) returns to the USA. The former junior international in Germany and the United States joins the second division club New Mexico United, who won the Western Conference of the USL Championship last season, but in the Playoffs for the title in the quarter-finals.
Zelalem, who was trained at Hertha and Arsenal, among others, was considered a giant talent at a young age. However, knee injuries threw him back several times. The midfielder, which had previously been active in the USA for a long time, had returned to Europe in January 2023. After a year and a half at the Dutch second division club FC Den Bosch, after a short clublessness, he switched to the NK Lokomotiva Zagreb last October. For the Croatian first division club, however, Zelalem remained without use.
“We are very happy to welcome a player from Gedion Kaliber and career in New Mexico,” said sporting director ITAMAR Keinan. “Gedion played for some of the largest clubs in the world, refined his skills and developed into a great player. We can’t wait to see what he does in black and yellow. “
