In May 2007, Mats Hummels made his debut as a professional footballer. 18 years later he ended his career.

For Mats Hummels, time is coming to an end as an active football player. The 2014 world champion has now announced on Instagram to end his career in summer: “I’m fighting with the emotions. Now the moment is coming that no footballer can get around,” he started his statement in an emotional video. “After over 18 years and so many things that football gave me, I will end my career this summer.”

In the video, Hummels sits in front of the camera and looks back at the beginning of his career: “When I see it all, I know more how much this whole way meant to me, how exceptionally it was to be able to experience it.” A lot is part of it: the right trainers, the right fans everything at the right time, the 78-time international continued.

Hummels started his career in youth at Bayern, before moving to Borussia Dortmund in 2008 – and started. For eight years he wore the “black and yellow” jersey, developed into a top performer. In 2016, Ligarival FC Bayern hired him before returning to BVB. Last summer he left the Bundesliga and joined the AS Roma.

In his career he won the German championship six times, four times the DFB Cup and cheered in the jersey of the German national team in 2014 over the world championship title.

His former club Borussia Dortmund reacted to the video with the words: “One of the biggest players in our club history brings up – your career was unique, Mats! We bow to your performance, your success and your career. Forever Borusse! Forever, a black and yellow legend!”, The BVB wrote at X.
