With Galatasaray Istanbul, İlkay Gündoğan experienced a debacle in Frankfurt. The former DFB star was disappointed after the clear bankruptcy.

Shrappy gossip for İlkay Gündoğan in the Champions League: At the guest appearance in Frankfurt, the long -time German international with his new club Galatasaray Istanbul came under his bikes. The Hesse defeated the Turkish top club 5: 1. “Gala” initially took the lead in Deutsche Bank Park and had kept the Bundesliga clubs in check for a long time. Then the team broke in.

“I believe that until the 1-1 team that was clearly better, we even had chances to do the second (goal, note, editor),” said a serving Gündoğan after the game at the broadcasting streaming service. After the equalization, however, “already noticed on the pitch that the heads then hung down and that the courage was somehow missing.”

Frankfurt had given the guests three goals before the break. Gündoğan complained that his team “actually felt the Frankfurter invited to every goal”. The 34-year-old frustrated: “And then such a result comes about, which is of course extremely a shame due to the first half.”

The ex-DFB captain himself did not know why Galatasaray gave the game out of his hand. In the first 25 minutes, the team from the Bosporus had the Frankfurters under control, especially in midfield, the eleven from Dino Toppmöller left hardly any opportunities to develop. But then the game tipped.

“Now I have no explanation so quickly,” said Gündoğan. In the Champions League, simple mistakes are the sticking point. Every opponent also has the quality of using these mistakes. “If you then do the first, second, third party, it will be punished at some point. The Frankfurters did an freezing cold today and accordingly scored five goals.” Overall, according to Gündoğan, the performance was “just not good enough”.

However, the midfield star was still convinced of the quality of the team. The team has many players in their ranks who could act at a very high level. Nevertheless, Gündoğan made it clear: “It definitely has to better get the necessary points in the Champions League that we also want to get and get.”
