Isak was unlucky in Dortmund – Real Sociedad bought BVB Option
Isak moved from BVB to San Sebastián in 2019 for 6.5 million euros after two and a half unlucky years, where he made his breakthrough. He had his best season in 2020/21 with 17 LaLiga goals and a market value of €40m at the time. After a mixed last season, this dropped to currently 30 million euros.
BVB actually had a buyback option for this sum, which Real Sociedad bought from the black and yellow in the course of Isak’s contract extension in July 2021 – cost: 8.5 million euros. Borussia received a total of 15 million euros for the former top talent. The rumored €70m that Newcastle are supposed to pay for Isak would make him by far the most expensive player in the club’s history. The Swede would replace ex-Hoffenheimer Joelinton (26), for whom 44 million euros flowed in 2019.
With nine days to go before the transfer window closes, Real Sociedad looks set to lose their top striker for a price that’s impossible to say no to. Newcastle’s spending would more than double to €136m in one fell swoop. Defenders Sven Botman (22, Lille) and Matt Targett (26, Aston Villa) as well as goalkeeper Nick Pope (30, Burnley) were signed for the first 66 million euros.
