Ex-BVB professional Henrikh Mkhitaryan ends national team career

After 95 missions

Henrikh Mkhitaryan ended his career in the Armenian national team at the age of 33 and after 95 international matches: “I came to this decision after my last game against Germany in November,” announced the ex-Dortmunder via Instagram.

Mkhitaryan scored the goal for Armenia in the 4-1 draw against Germany – his 32nd international goal was also his last. “I think it’s the right time. I have given my national team everything I can give. For the coming years I will therefore concentrate fully on my club career. My football nest was built in Armenia, my homeland, and I will forever be grateful to every single person who has supported me, coached me, played with and contributed to my development as a footballer and as a person.”

It has been “an honor to have played for my nation for the past 15 years and even more so to have captained it for the last six years,” Mkhitaryan continued. With the exception of 2010 and 2018, the attacking force had been voted Footballer of the Year ten times in his home country since 2009. The 33-year-old failed to qualify for a World Cup or European Championship with Armenia, and the current 92nd in the FIFA rankings has not been able to take part in a major international tournament to this day.

It is now unclear how Mkhitaryan’s club career will continue beyond the summer. His contract with AS Roma, which was only extended by a year last summer, expires at the end of the season. “Rome conquered me in these two years, as a team and as a city, thanks to the unbelievable passion of the fans,” explained the Armene, who is listed at Borussia Dortmund among the most valuable departures as well as the most valuable arrivals in the club’s history at the time .
