Almost eight months after the end of Borussia Dortmund, Nuri Şahin returns to the Süper Lig. The 37-year-old takes over the coaching post at the Istanbul association Basaksehir FK. The working paper of predecessor Çağdaş Atan had previously ended mutually. Şahin meets two players with Bundesliga experience on the Bosphorus.
In January, Şahin had to vacate his post in Dortmund after a little more than half a year after collecting an average of 1.48 points in 27 games. The job at Basaksehir is its third coaching station and the second in the Süper Lig. The former midfielder was in the service of Antalyaspor from October 2021 to December 2023. His balance sheet in 92 games was 38 wins and 31 defeats. At the age of 37 he is the youngest coach of Süper Lig and Domenico Tedesco (Fenerbahce), Thomas Reis (Samsunspor) and Markus Gisdol (KaySerispor) of the fourth with Bundesliga experience.
The start of the season of Basaksehir was poor with two draws against KaySerispor (1: 1) and Eyüpspor (0-0). In addition, the club missed the qualification for Conference League, as the playoffs were defeated against the Romanian representative CS Universitea Craiova. Davie Selke and ex-Schalker Amine Harit are two ex-Bundesliga professionals in the Şahin squad. Against Harit, Şahin was four times on the pitch as a professional, with Selke even together in the jersey of Werder Bremen.
