Captain Marcel Risse and Viktoria Köln are extending their collaboration by another year. The third division team announced this on Sunday. The 32-year-old joined the neighbors from 1. FC Köln on a free transfer last summer and played in 34 of 38 league games last season, in which he contributed ten goals.
Risse should also lead the young team in the new season with his experience from a total of 176 Bundesliga games and 64 appearances in the 2nd division. “I think I’m the only one who can really judge how important Marcel Risse was for Viktoria, for his teammates and for me as a coach last season. I commit myself: without the cello we would not have managed to hold the class. He accepted our brutal situation the way it was from day one, endured all resistance with the squad, led the way on and off the field! According to the motto ‘Don’t whine, just do it’. He put his own game completely at the service of the team. Every coach would like to have such a captain. The fact that he decided to continue along the same path with us, despite many other options, makes me happy for all of us. He will be important to give our young team support,” said head coach Olaf Janßen.
Risse is looking forward to “continuing to follow the path and being part of the development of our squad and our association. The last year was very intense and I’m glad that the main core of the team is staying together. That’s how we laid the foundation for the next steps last year, which I’m very happy to be part of.”
