At the beginning of the training week, the Spaniard Josep Martínez experiences a tragedy. An elderly man dies in a collision. Martínez is in shock.

A tragic accident in northern Italy claimed a human life – and an ex-Bundesliga professional was involved. Inter’s substitute goalkeeper Josep Martínez (formerly RB Leipzig) hit an 81-year-old man in an electric wheelchair with his car. The pensioner died at the scene of the accident.

According to police, the incident occurred on a country road in the municipality of Fenegrò, near Lake Como. According to initial investigations, the pensioner is said to have made a surprise U-turn in his four-wheeled wheelchair on the street in the municipality of Fenegrò. Martinez, who according to the report was in the oncoming lane, was no longer able to avoid the vehicle.

The exact circumstances of the accident are still being investigated. The club announced that the 27-year-old goalkeeper was in shock.

Martinez played for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga from 2020 to 2022. He has been under contract with Inter Milan since the summer and is number two there behind former Gladbach and Bayern goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Many of the club’s professionals traditionally live in the region around Lake Como.
