Thorsten Fink is no longer the coach of the Belgian first division club KRC Genk. The former coach of the Hamburger SV was released after a year and a half. The separation took place on Monday, one day after the 1-1 draw in the home game against KVC Westerlo.
The club justified the decision with inconsistent results and the team’s fluctuating performance. After 18 matchdays, Genk is sixth in the table, 14 points behind leaders Union St. Gilloise.
The 58-year-old former Bundesliga professional can look back on an eventful coaching career. Before Genk, Fink already worked for the Belgian club KVV St. Truiden. He also gained experience in Austria, Switzerland, Cyprus, Japan, Latvia and Saudi Arabia. Thorsten Fink trained from 2011 to 2013 HSV.
In terms of sport, Jimmy Hartwig has achieved everything with Hamburger SV: The now 71-year-old was part of the team that won the European Cup in 1983, he became German champion three times and was a German national player.
In the ARD program “The 100 – what moves Germany”, the HSV legend appeared unusually vulnerable. Hartwig reported there about the abuse he experienced as a child. His grandfather was a “dirty, damned Nazi” and repeatedly beat him out of racism. More on the topic here.

The Hamburger SV footballers were defeated by FC Bayern Munich on Sunday. The Hanseatic League clearly lost to the leaders 0:6 (0:3). DFB captain Giulia Gwinn with a strong direct shot (16th minute), European champion Georgia Stanway with a penalty kick (27th), Klara Bühl (45th + 3), Pernille Harder (63rd) and Lea Schüller (85th) scored for coach José Barcala’s team. There was also an own goal from Victoria Schulz (47th).
Both clubs will see each other again in March when they meet in Hamburg in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. At the end of the year in the Bundesliga, the HSV women will play against VfL Wolfsburg on December 21st. Hamburg are currently in second-to-last place in the table with seven points from 13 games.
More than 10,000 fans accompanied HSV to Sinsheim and loudly supported the guests in the stadium, which was sold out with 30,150 spectators. But in the end there was a significant setback on Saturday at TSG Hoffenheim (1:4) after two previous home wins against VfB Stuttgart and Werder Bremen.
