Ex-Bayern star Boateng again not in the Lyon squad

Once again without 2014 soccer world champion Jerome Boateng, the former French champions Olympique Lyon have suffered a setback in the fight for a place in the European Cup.

Lyon only drew 1-1 (1-1) at RC Lens. After the reason for the 33-year-old’s absence initially remained unclear, Lyon coach Peter Bosz explained on “Amazon Prime Video”: “He was sick. He was with us at the airport yesterday, but he was sick that night.”

The Dutchman Bosz, ex-coach of Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, had left Boateng in the squad against OGC Nice last week. Bosz didn’t want to commit on Saturday whether Boateng will soon be back in the starting XI of OL.

“All the best for the game guys. Allez OL,” Boateng tweeted on Saturday. The defender’s contract with FC Bayern expired last summer. The defensive specialist has a two-year contract in Lyon until 2023.
