He was an assistant coach at FC Bayern Munich for years: Hermann Gerland. He is now an assistant coach for the German U21 national team. The “Tiger” has now told what he would do differently in retrospect.
Hermann Gerland, currently assistant coach with the German U21 national team, has now broken away from some of his previous behavior as a coach. “My style doesn’t work anymore. I used to be too dogged, got loud and scolded. I wouldn’t do that anymore today,” said the 67-year-old on “ran.de”.
According to Gerland, he learned how to relax as an assistant coach from Hansi Flick and especially from Jupp Heynckes: “Heynckes in particular used to be just as obsessed and dogged as I was.”
“I was always careful”
And added: “During my career, I’ve worked with Champions League winner coaches like Van Gaal or Flick, among others. I’ve always been careful, so I’ve learned a lot from them. In my position as an assistant coach it’s still the case that I say clearly what the boys have to do to become good players. Maybe in a little nicer way than before, but just as clearly.” But he observed exactly how outstanding Heynckes and Flick dealt with their players. “And they gave it back to them with performance,” said Gerland.
Gerland was an assistant coach at FC Bayern until June 2021 and a total of 25 years with the record champions. During this time he worked with both Jupp Heynckes and Hansi Flick.
