Everything second hand! Senate wants to open DIY store of the future

Everything has a second life at this hardware store: wooden windows, insulating materials, beams, etc. A new type of re-use hardware store is scheduled to open in Marzahn this summer.

Construction companies can use these building materials and use them in new construction or renovation. Later, private home builders or modernizers will also be able to pick up used materials.

They should be installed in the region if possible. In the case of unique products – such as the organ from a church – they can also be used abroad.

“We want to continue driving the resource turnaround in the construction sector,” says Matthias Borowski, spokesman for the Environment Senate. “In addition to the re-use superstore in Karstadt Hermannplatz, we are also planning a re-use DIY store with partners for used furniture and components. At trade fairs and the dismantling of buildings, there are definitely relevant quantities of such products.”

Through recycling, Berlin is already saving 2.2 million tons of raw materials (gravel, sand) a year in civil and structural engineering.

Studies by the Environmental Senate show that climate-friendly building materials in new buildings can reduce emissions of harmful greenhouse gases by 60 percent.
