Students and employees of the university library of Maastricht were evacuated on Friday evening. According to the police, it should be a suspicious object. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service Defense (EOD) has been called up.

The call came in just before eight o’clock. According to evacuees, it would probably be an unattended backpack, but the police cannot yet confirm this. “The EOD is coming to watch as a precaution,” said a police spokeswoman.

Street closed
The Explosive Exploration Team (TEV) of the police has now arrived at the library to inspect the object. As a precaution, Nieuwenhofstraat, from Sint Pieterstraat, is closed. That’s the street behind the library.

30 to 40 evacuees
Other buildings in the street are still accessible. About 30 to 40 people had to leave the building.
