Eva Jinek clashes with Telegraaf boss about ‘ugly’ photos Sigrid Kaag

Eva Jinek clashed in her talk show with Paul Jansen, the editor-in-chief of De Telegraaf. She asked him whether he deliberately publishes ugly photos of D66 leader Sigrid Kaag. “This is not fair.”

Paul Jansen will stop as editor-in-chief of De Telegraaf in the summer and because of that news fact he sat at Eva Jinek’s talk show table last night. There the presenter decided to confront him with the criticism that his newspaper would deliberately use ugly photos in articles about progressive women like Sigrid Kaag.

Not the best photo

As a specific example, Eva mentions in the broadcast this article from his paper, comparing them to a article of the Volkskrant. “I can show a picture. This is a photo of Kaag on the cover of De Telegraaf. On the same day, because this is the same news story, this is de Volkskrant and then NRC. If you see those three photos together…”

Then you don’t see much special, says Paul. “Yes, I certainly don’t see much difference between NRC and De Telegraaf. It could be me.”

Table guest Natasja Gibbs: “Yes, it’s not her best photo.”

Not fair

Table guest Hans Sibbel does not understand where Eva wants to go. “I think he is appealing. Sorry, Paul, I’m on your side this time. I really don’t understand what you are talking about now. So far I can follow everything, but this is just… Is she allowed to look like this?”

Paul thinks that Eva is playing the game deviously. “I would fair if you were to show a series of photos by Kaag and not pick one and compare them. I can tell you: we don’t have a policy that we say: you know what, we’re going to take a nice picture of that one.”

Myth

Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema claims so. “I know that a certain mayor of a big city has spread that talk about me, but it’s just a myth.”

Eva: “She thinks so too. We are talking about Femke Halsema.”

Paul: “Yes, she once wrote in a book that I would have revealed that we always post an ugly picture of her, but that’s just really nonsense. Why would we do that?”

Eva: “I don’t know.”

Paul: “No, neither do I.”

Eva a little later: “A photo is a choice. You make a choice. As you choose the headline, you also choose the photo. It all radiates something. That’s true.”

Paul: “That is true, but again: we have no policy on that.”

‘You look selectively’

Eve is doing this cherry-picking, says Paul. “We have also had enough photos in the newspaper of Mark Rutte or Geert Wilders, of which you will also think: well… Or Rita Verdonk in the past.”

He continues: “It’s fine that you raise it, but I think you’re looking a bit selective based on mister Schimmelpenninck, who isn’t really someone you should set your course on and of course likes to provoke. That is of course his business model.”

Eva: “He said this recently, so we wanted to discuss that with you.”

Paul: “Yes, well, I can say that I do not recognize that, as it is called.”

Distrust

When it comes to Donald Trump a little later, Eva jokes: “We are all listening to you with hawk eyes and ears.”

Paul laughs: “Yes, you are waiting for me to make a mistake.”

Eve: “Not at all!”

Natasja: “What mistrust!”

Paul: “Yes, do you think it’s strange after the item from just now?”
