COLOGNE (dpa-AFX) – The Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings is sending its first aircraft to the Middle East crisis area to bring around 150 tourists back to Germany. A special flight is planned from Riyadh in Saudi Arabia to Cologne on the night of Friday to Saturday, as the company announced.
Guests from the company’s own tour operator Eurowings Holidays come on board, who were surprised in Dubai and the surrounding area by the US-Israeli attack on Iran. They will be taken to Riyadh airport by bus.
The Airbus A320 with flight number EW6131 is expected to land in Cologne at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday. This is the Lufthansa Group’s first evacuation flight to Germany. The airline has previously worked as a service provider for the federal government.
Special federal government flight from Riyadh on Sunday
In addition, the federal government wants to bring Germans stranded in the region back home from the Saudi capital Riyadh after three special flights from Oman. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) announced this on Instagram on Thursday evening.
According to a paper from the Federal Foreign Office available to the German Press Agency for the information of the Bundestag, the flight from Saudi Arabia will be organized on Sunday afternoon with a chartered plane from the airline Sundair. In preparation for their departure, particularly vulnerable Germans such as pregnant women, sick people or the elderly are to be brought overland from the Gulf Emirate of Qatar to Riyadh./ceb/DP/stk
