THEThe European Union hoisted his flag for the first time in 1986. A year earlier, between 28 and 29 June ’85, the institutions of the European Community had adopted it with official status: since then, the 12 -star flag is the emblem of what has then become the union.

However, the flag was born 30 years earlier, within the Council of Europe, International organization for human rights that with the EU has no formal link, which over the years has encouraged the nascent European institutions to adopt the same flag. Thus we arrive at the approval of the proposal by the European Council.

European Council and Council of Europe are not the same at all. And then there is also the EU Council. On December 9, ’55 the Council received various proposals, then chose unanimously. It opted for the number 12 as a symbol of perfection and wholeness. The flag is an emblem shared by the two institutions, and is therefore hoisted by many states that are not part of the EU.
