European Open | Favorite Kontaveit and Pera in Hamburg in the final

Favorite Anett Kontaveit from Estonia and the American Bernarda Pera have reached the final of the tennis tournament in Hamburg and are playing for the title at the European Open.

World number two Kontaveit prevailed 6:3, 7:5 against Anastasia Potapova from Russia. Pera beat number seven seeded Maryna Zanevska of Belgium 6-2, 6-4. Both finalists have not yet dropped a set at the clay court event during the course of the tournament.

The 27-year-old Pera once again confirmed her strong form, she had already celebrated her first tournament victory on the WTA tour last week as a qualifier in Budapest. Kontaveit, who is one year younger, is top seeded in Hamburg and won against Andrea Petkovic in the quarter-finals. The 34-year-old from Darmstadt had given up injured and was the last German player to drop out at Rothenbaum.

In the men’s tournament, the number 1 seeded Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz is still on course for the title. The 19-year-old shooting star won his quarter-finals against the Russian Karen Khachanov 6-0 and 6-2. In the semifinals, number 6 in the world rankings meets Alex Molcan. The Slovak sat down against Borna Coric (Croatia), who gave up 7-6, 2-0 for Molcan.

Previously, the two unseeded Francisco Cerundolo and Lorenzo Musetti had reached the semifinals. Argentina’s Cerundolo beat Aslan Karazew from Russia 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4). Musetti surprisingly won 6:4, 6:3 against the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
