The handball players from SG Flensburg-Handewitt remained unbeaten in their twelfth competitive game of the season. In the European League, Bidasoa Irun in Spain lost 33:32 (17:17).
As with the narrow success against Saint-Raphael Var a week ago, the Schleswig-Holsteiners remained below their potential for a long time. Only a 6-0 run towards the end of the second half brought the SG back – and seconds before the end the decisive goal. The best thrower was Emil Jakobsen with ten goals.
The Flensburg team continues in the Bundesliga on Sunday with the home game against HC Erlangen, and in the European League on November 11th with the away game against HC Potaissa Turda in Romania.
SG too faulty
The Bundesliga table leaders initially found their way into the game better than the hosts – without excelling. Keeper Kevin Möller fended off the first seven-meter penalty, and a 3-0 run gave SG its first lead (10./5:3). Within a few minutes, however, this was lost again with a 0:3 run (13th/5:6) and restored after another 3:0 run by the North Germans (17th/10:8).
But Flensburg had a hard time against the fast and very mobile Spaniards, especially since they missed a few chances in front of the opponent’s goal. SG coach Ales Pajovic swore his team in again during a time out, demanding more discipline in defense and more speed in offense. But his team didn’t implement this, the Schleswig-Holstein team’s game was too full of errors, so they went into the break with a draw.
Only the final spurt brought victory
Less than a minute had been played after the restart and Irun had already scored twice. Daniel Garcia Rivera in particular threw the SG defense into disarray – suddenly Flensburg was four goals behind (36./18:22). It didn’t work well for the Bundesliga club, and Pajovic’s time-out also had no effect. The SG couldn’t get close. Even in the middle of the second round the deficit wasn’t reduced (45th/24:28).
But in the final phase, a few saves from Möller ensured that Flensburg was able to turn things around: three goals from Niklas Kirkelökke gave SG the first lead in the second half (56th/31:30). Would it now be enough to win? Yes, because Simon Pytlick made it 33:31 seconds before the end, which was enough even if the Spaniards scored again.
