Nils Dunkel surprisingly won the bronze medal on the pommel horse. Armenian Harutyun Merdinyan won gold and Dutchman Loran de Munck took silver.

What a surprise on the pommel horse! At the European Gymnastics Championships in Munich, the German Nils Dunkel won the bronze medal to the cheers of the 9,000 spectators in the Olympic Hall.

“I didn’t feel my routine was as good as the judges saw it. I had to push a lot. It was a routine where I had to fight a lot. That’s why I was a bit surprised about my final score.”said Dunkel after the competition.

Bronze for Dunkel: Greatest achievement of his career

The 25-year-old had to tremble to the end. Because the man from Erfurt was fourth in the final and had to wait a long time for his competitors to finish. When the “6” lit up for the last starter, Artur Davtyan from Armenia, it was clear: dark wins bronze.

Dunkel now also wants to celebrate the medal properly. “Because the competitions are over today and we still have the banquet today, one or the other champagne bottle will lose the cork” he announced.

With a score of 14.633 points and third place, in his second international individual final after fourth place at the European Championships in Glasgow 2018, Dunkel improved again on parallel bars compared to his performance in the team final the day before, where he had scored 14.466 points and the German team seventh became.

Dolgopyat European champion on floor, Petrounias on rings

The final on the floor was already on the program beforehand. Without German participation, the Israeli Artem Dolgopyat won the gold medal ahead of Krisztofer Mensaros from Hungary and the Brit Kaje Jarman.

And also on the rings no German had qualified for the final. The Greek Eleftherios Petrounias, who had already impressed in qualifying with the highest score, easily won gold. The silver medal went to Adem Asil of Turkey, bronze to Courtney Tulloch of Britain.
