Alexandra Burghardt finished eighth in the gold run of Mujinga Kambundji at the home European Championships in Munich over 200 m.
The 28-year-old ran 23.24 seconds in the final, on Sunday Burghardt wants to fight for gold in the 4×100 m relay. At the Winter Olympics in Beijing, she won silver as a bobsleigh brakewoman.
The Swiss Kambundji was unbeatable in 22.32 seconds and dethroned the defending champion Dina Asher-Smith (22.43 / Great Britain). On Tuesday, Kambundji became Vice European Champion over 100 m behind Gina Lückenkemper. The Danish Ida Karstoft took bronze with 22.72 seconds.
Jessica-Bianca Wessolly (Mannheim) was eliminated in the semi-finals, as was Corinna Schwab (Chemnitz), who had previously been considered a medal contender.
In 2016, 100m European Champion Lückenkemper won the last medal for Germany over the half stadium round with bronze. The last gold went to a German sprinter in 1990 – at that time Katrin Krabbe won in Split for the GDR.
